7 Questions About Stainless Steel IBCs We Get Asked Every Week (And The Honest Answers)
By the team at Shijiazhuang Fulait Packaging Co., LTD
I've been answering customer emails for 15 years.
Some questions come up so often, I could answer them in my sleep.
Here are the top 7—and the honest answers, not the sales pitch.
Q1: "How long will a stainless steel IBC last?"
Short answer: 20+ years, easy.
Long answer: I've seen 304 IBCs from the 1990s still in service at a dairy plant in Wisconsin. They look ugly—dents, scratches, faded paint—but they don't leak and they're still food-safe.
The lifespan depends on:
Material grade: 316L outlasts 304 in harsh environments
Maintenance: Regular cleaning = longer life
Application: Storing water vs. storing hot acid—different ballgames
Real talk: If you buy quality stainless and take basic care of it, your IBC will outlast your career.
Q2: "304 or 316L—which one do I need?"
This is the question.
Here's my decision tree:
If you're storing... | Go with... |
|---|---|
Food, water, most oils | 304 |
Salty/brine solutions | 316L |
Acids (check concentration) | 316L (or higher) |
Pharmaceuticals | 316L (for validation) |
Hot liquids (>50°C) | 316L to be safe |
Solvents | 304 is usually fine |
The honest truth: For 60% of applications, 304 is perfectly adequate. Don't let anyone upsell you to 316L unless you actually need it.

Q3: "Can you customize IBCs?"
Short answer: Yes. We do it every week.
Long answer: Customization is kind of our thing.
Here's what we've done recently:
Heated jackets for a resin manufacturer (steam tracing)
Insulated shells for a syrup company (keeps product warm)
Custom valves (PTFE-lined for acids, tri-clamp for pharma)
Non-standard sizes (from 200L to 1500L)
Agitators/mixers for products that settle
The catch: Custom takes longer and costs more. But if you need it, you need it.

Q4: "How do I clean it?"
We wrote a whole article on this (see our Technical Articles section).
But the 30-second version:
Empty completely
Rinse immediately
Use the right cleaner for your residue
Mechanical action (brush or spray ball)
Final rinse and dry
Golden rule: Don't leave residue sitting. Don't use harsh chemicals without checking compatibility. Don't use steel wool.
Q5: "Are your IBCs certified for shipping hazardous materials?"
Yes—if you order the right configuration.
Here's what we offer:
Certification | For |
|---|---|
UN/DOT | Hazardous materials transport (road/sea) |
ASME Section VIII | Pressure vessels |
FDA | Food contact |
ISO 9001 | Quality management system |
Important: UN certification depends on the valve, fittings, and testing. Tell us what you're shipping, and we'll spec the right certification.
Q6: "Do you offer discounts for bulk orders?"
Yes. But let's be real about what that means.
Order size | Typical discount |
|---|---|
1-5 units | List price |
6-20 units | 5-10% |
21-50 units | 10-15% |
50+ units | Negotiable |
The honest part: We're not a giant corporation with massive margins. We're a factory. Our discounts are real but not crazy.
What we can offer on bulk orders:
Dedicated project management
Staged delivery
Custom packaging for containers
Extended warranty
Q7: "Why should I buy from you instead of a local supplier?"
Fair question.
Here's the honest answer:
Factor | Local Supplier | Fulait (China) |
|---|---|---|
Price | Higher | Lower |
Lead time | Shorter | Longer |
Communication | Easy | Requires effort |
Customization | Limited | Flexible |
Minimum order | Often high | Low (1 unit OK) |
We win on: Price, customization flexibility, and willingness to work with smaller orders.
We lose on: Lead time and convenience.
If you need one IBC tomorrow, buy local. If you're planning ahead and want to save 30-50%, we're your people.
The One Question Nobody Asks (But Should)
"What happens if something goes wrong?"
We answer emails. We answer calls. Even at 2 AM your time.
We've shipped replacement valves overnight. We've walked customers through troubleshooting on WhatsApp video. We've taken back tanks that didn't fit and remade them right.
Buying from China isn't risky if you buy from the right people.
